Exam Preparation: Strategies To Help You Answer Extended Questions

I don’t know how to start this question, I can’t answer that, I don’t know what this question means? I don’t know what to do?

Are these familiar responses when you set extended questions for your students? This is a national problem faced by thousands of students taking exams every year. This is not just a GCSE PE or A Level PE problem, there are extended questions in most, if not all examination papers.

So what if we could teach pupils how to break down, decipher and answer any extended questions? By using Answer Perfect’s unique approach to extended questions, we have proven to improve students’ grades in answering extended questions.

Here is our approach to exam preparation and our strategy to help your students answer extended questions successfully…

Answering Extended Questions Successfully…

Ask your students to break down extended questions into command, focus, and topic areas:
– Highlight the command words
– Highlight the topic areas
– Highlight the focus of the question

Teach your students what the command words are looking for, which are specific and different to each exam board, and print them from the specification. Each specification is at the beginning of our course area to reduce time.

Focus on also teaching your students how to introduce the examiner to their basic knowledge of the topic area, helping them to then apply their knowledge to the focus of the question and guide them on how to then explain their knowledge and understanding of the topic area and focus of the question.

Your students should then break the question down into three sections – Know, Apply, Say Why. Highlight the written answer using 3 different colours to break down the 3 core areas above.

Preparing Your Students For Exam Questions

Watch our video tutorials specifically designed to break down extended questions into the command, topic, and focus of the question then support students into writing their perfect answer by guiding them into how to introduce the examiner, how to apply their knowledge towards the focus of the question and then expanding on their deeper level of understanding into explaining, justifying, evaluating, analysing why they have put what they have.

Evidence has proven that by repeating this process students improve their knowledge and understanding, but they also can become more confident in answering any extended question, not just in PE. We have had students be successful and succeed in scoring high marks in extended questions. As an examiner out of 500 responses only a handful of students access over half marks which is alarming and this was one of the reasons why we set up Answer Perfect.
